Theater of the mind!

What? We will listen to the BBC radio dramatisation of Ursula K. Le Guin's classic science fiction novel: The Left Hand of Darkness."

The event is not planned as a full dinner. But the host is providing drinks and pizza. Guests are welcome to bring any kind food item or snack to share. This is optional.

Why? Every month, the Armchair Adventure Book Club meets on the last Wednesday of the month to discuss a monthly book selection. June's book if The Left Hand of Darkness. Whenever there is a movie adaptation of the book, we schedule a watch party to watch the movie. Anybody who reads the book OR watches the movie (or does both) is fully prepared for the book club discussion.

There IS NO MOVIE ADAPTATION of The Left Hand of Darkness.

But there IS a BBC Radio 4 dramatisation of the book. It was adapted by Judith Adams and features a full cast, including Lesley Sharp, Toby Jones, and Louise Brealey. The production is approximately 2 hours. Note that this is NOT an audio book. This is an audio-only audio "play" or dramatisation of the book.

If you listen to this radio dramatisation, you will know the story and will be full prepared for the book club discussion. Of course we also hope everyone will read the written book or listen to audio book.

What is the book about? The novel follows the story of Genly Ai, a human native of Terra, who is sent to the planet of Gethen as an envoy of the Ekumen, a loose confederation of planets. Ai's mission is to persuade the nations of Gethen to join the Ekumen, but he is stymied by a lack of understanding of their culture.
