The Book: Ender's Game, by Orson Scott Card. 324 pages
Set in a future time when Earth has survived two invasions by an insectoid alien species, Ender's Game is about a very young boy - Andrew "Ender" Wiggin - who is a rare third child allowed by the government. A child prodigy, Ender is recruited by the planetary military to train as a soldier and military leader in an orbiting space station. He does not fully realize how much hope is pinned on him and some of his fellow students as a means for saving the world from an anticipated future invasion.
What to Bring? You do not need to bring anything. Simply read the book, OR listen to the audio book, OR watch the feature film adaptation before attending the meeting. It can be useful if you bring your physical or digital copy of the book.
Who? This is a fun book club event that men and women from the neighborhood potluck list are invited to, along with everybody else who is interested.
At our January "pitch meeting" at which book club members suggested books to read during the year, Serafina came for the first time, and recommended Ender's Game. This was one of the books that members voted to read during 2025. We picked it as the first book to read (for February) because it is widely available and many people have already read it.
We really hope that you will come to the February book club meeting, to discuss Ender's Game, even if you don't have a chance to finish reading the book before the book club eating. This is a book that is widely read in high schools and has many interesting themes and topics to discuss.
Ender's Game won both the Nebuula and Hugo awards, the two most acclaimed awards in science fiction. The book was recently adapted into a live action movie, starring Harrison Ford.
We will organize a movie watch party before the book club meeting, as well as a get-together to read the book. You will be well-prepared to discuss the book if you have read the book, OR watched the movie (or both).
Fun Book Club: This will be the 30th monthly meeting of this book club. We had so much fun at the all of the meetings so far, with wonderful, fascinating discussions with great neighbors and new friends. If you like books or interesting discussions... or simply want to have fun meeting new people, I highly recommend RSVP-ing for this event.
