Please join us at a special potluck dinner to welcome new Japanese ESL students to Arizona!
J. F. Oberlin University is a four-year university located in Machida, a suburb of Tokyo. On 15 August 2024, a new group of Japanese students will be arriving from this school, coming to Tempe for four months to study English as a Second Language (ESL).
Preston and Kumiko participate in the OvECS Homestay program, which arranges host families for international students coming to the United States from various Japanese universities to study. The majority of these students come to study English, such as in ESL programs at Arizona State University. Fellow neighborhood group members Victor and Kyoko have joined the Homestay program as well, and will be hosting their first student with this new August-arriving group.
These students are encouraged to participate in family dinners every day and participate in family activities. They would love to meet some Arizona neighbors and practice speaking English.
Limited seating event. This dinner is planned for a relatively small group of people. Prior students who came here as part of this program looked forward to attending many neighborhood potluck events, large and small. But for this initial "welcome dinner" we keep the number of dinner guests relatively small, so as to not overwhelm the newly-arrived students.
Free event. Those who come to this event are asked to bring any kind of food, except for Japanese food. Main dish, salad, appetizer, etc. all welcome. (Drinks, utensils, plates, etc. will be provided by the hosts. No additional desserts are needed.)
Indoors or outdoors? Indoors.
