Celebrate the 65th Anniversary of the Barbie Doll!
The Epicurean Toastmasters Club meets on the first Friday of every month. That means that the Epicurean's monthly meeting for September 2024 falls on one of America's greatest holidays: Barbie Doll Day!
Barbie Doll Day marks the anniversary of the day that the Barbie doll first went on sale on September 6, 1959.
Location: Neighborhood group members David and Sonia are the venue hosts for this event. They are generously hosting this event in the beautiful private theater and commons area in the Emerson building in downtown Tempe.
Pool: The pool and patio will be open and available for use after the dinner and formal Toastmasters meeting. The pool and patio is large enough to accommodate 600 people. Feel free to bring a swimsuit and towel if you want to get in!
What to wear? Dress as Barbie. Or dress as Ken. Or dress as one of Barbie's friends (Skipper, Alan, Stacie, Midge, etc.). Or just wear pink!
Menu: The dinner menu is delicious home-made food from 1959, including:
chicken and mushroom casserole
meatloaf
crock pot corn
dinner rolls
Caesar salad
Waldorf salad
French onion soup
Swedish meatballs
Parmesan chicken
What if I'm not a good cook, or don't have time to cook? We really want you to attend this event! Please don't let the food requirement of this event prevent you from coming. We would love to see as many home-cooked foods as possible. But we will also love it if you bring something that was purchased from a restaurant or store.
What to bring? This is a free event. But all guests are asked to bring one of the specified dinner items. Enough for 8 to 12 people.
Optional: In addition to bringing a dinner food item, guests are welcome to bring a dessert. Homemade desserts are especially appreciated. But a dessert purchased from a bakery or store is fine, too. Pink desserts are encouraged!
What will Happen? Guests will socialize and eat dinner. Talk to old friends and meet new people! A member of the Epicurean Toastmasters club will give a short speech (6 - 7 minutes). Speeches are typically humorous and are about personal topics, such as "Why I Love Gardening" or "the crazy thing that happened on my road trip." Another club member will conduct "Topics Topics," giving people an opportunity to speak impromptu for 1 to 2 minutes, in response to a question.
Note that Toastmaster events offer opportunities to speak. But speakers are pre-assigned. Guests are very welcome to attend, and are given an opportunity to introduce themselves, but are never required to do any public speaking.
(*NOTE: Barbie Doll Day is DIFFERENT from National Barbie Day, March 9th, which celebrates the day in 1959 when the doll premiered at the American International Toy Fair in New York.)
