Free event.
What? At this neighborhood potluck event you will have an opportunity to meet new people as well as talk to people you may already know from the neighborhood. Mainly guests will eat and talk to each other. But also, you will be able to hear one prepared speech by a member of the Epicurean Toastmasters Club, as well as a few short impromptu responses to a "table talk" prompt. As a guest, you will not be asked to speak to the whole group. (But you will be given an opportunity to introduce yourself if you want to.)
Organizers: This event was organized jointly by the Neighborhood Potluck Group and the Epicurean Toastmasters.
The Epicurean Toastmasters Club was chartered in 2003 as a fun social club that meets once per month for a great dinner as well as an official Toastmasters meeting. They are part of the international Toastmasters organization, which helps people develop their leadership and speaking skills. This club's official website is here: https://www.toastmasters.org/Find-a-Club/00009961-epicureantoastmastersclub
What will the speech be about? We don't know yet. These are often humorous speeches about something personal. The point of the Toastmasters organization is to help people improve their public speaking abilities. There are no talks trying to sell you something or get you to join a political party or convert or anything like that. You can Google "Toastmasters" if you want to know more.
Are the speeches long and rambling? No! This is literally the world's largest organization dedicated to improving public speaking skills. They have been doing this since 1924. Every speech and table talk is TIMED by a appointed time keeper. The typical Toastmasters speech is a maximum of seven minutes long -- and strictly timed. Going over time is frowned upon.
What should I bring? This is a free event. But guests will bring a dish to share. Enough for 10 to 12 people. Main dish, entreƩ, salad, side dish, bread, hors d oeuvres, etc. Bring food only. The host will provide drinks, plates, napkins, cups, utensils, etc.
What should I wear? Most guests will be dressed casually or semi-casually. Feel free to dress up more if you'd like to.
Who? Everyone is welcome. Members of the Epicurean Toastmasters and Neighborhood Potluck Group will be invited. But one does not need to belong to either of these groups in order to attend. Feel free to invite friends!
The last time that a joint potluck dinner event was organized by the Neighborhood Potluck Group and the Epicurean Toastmasters we had about 60 people in attendance. Half of the attendees were members of the neighborhood potluck group. Half were members of the Epicurean Toastmasters club and their friends.
