The Book: The Door Into Summer, by Robert A. Heinlein. 304 pages.
Robert A. Heinlein is considered one of the "big three" authors of science fiction. (Along with Arthur C. Clarke and Isaac Asimov.) The Door Into Summer is regarded as one of his best, most enjoyable novels. It was adapted into a great 2021 Netflix film, made in Japan. Before the book club meeting, we will schedule a watch party for those who want to watch the film.
To prepare for this book club meeting, you can read (or listen to) the novel. OR watch the 2021 film adaptation. Or do both.
This novel was inspired by Heinlein's cat, and can be described: "Dan Davis was tricked by an unscrupulous business partner and a greedy fiancee into spending thirty years in suspended animation just when he was on the verge of a success beyond his wildest dreams. But when he awoke in the future, he discovered he had the means to travel back in time -- and get his revenge!"
Heinlein published 32 novels, 59 short stories, and 16 collections during his life. Nine films, two television series, several episodes of a radio series, and a board game have been derived more or less directly from his work. Film adaptations of his writing include "Starship Troopers", "The Puppet Masters" and "Destination Moon."
What to Bring? You do not need to bring anything. Simply read the book, OR listen to the audio book before attending the meeting. It can be useful if you bring your physical or digital copy of the book.
Who? This is a fun book club event that men and women from the neighborhood potluck list are invited to, along with everybody else who is interested.
Fun Book Club: This will be the 14th meeting of this new book club. We had so much fun at the all of the meetings so far, with wonderful, fascinating discussions with great neighbors and new friends. If you like books or interesting discussions... or simply want to have fun meeting new people, I highly recommend RSVP-ing for this event.
You should be able to check out a physical or digital copy of this book from Tempe-area public libraries. An audio book is also available.
