We know that there is a large number of people in the community who are are interested in service activities. People have demonstrated already that they are willing to come to activities to help each other out. These activities can include all kinds of things: gardening, landscaping, painting walls, preparing meals, visiting people in the hospital, helping people move, setting up chairs for a funeral, cleaning a park, school, or church building.
Without any announcement or promotion of the group, 18 people from the neighborhood potluck group have already signed up for the newly-added "Service Activities" sub-group. They simply saw that listing when they were looking at available sub-groups on the potluckdinner.org website.
Brad is hosting a dinner for key leaders associated with providing volunteer community service. We will be discussing how to organize the neighborhood service group, and making plans for a broader kick-off meeting which everybody who is interested will be invited to.
We want to make sure that we work WITH Joe Forte's excellent group: Keep Tempe Beautiful. We do not want to duplicate what that group does. We want to better organize volunteer service in areas that "Keep Tempe Beautiful" does not cover.
Also, we will not be duplicating anything done by JustServe.org, which is a website dedicated to listing service opportunities, but is not an organized group. Our intention is to organize a group that can directly provide provide service for local needs. A group that gets together to provide service in order to have fun, build community, and meet friends.
