The 2005 feature film adaptation of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was directed by Garth Jennings. The film stars Martin Freeman, Sam Rockwell, Yasiin Bey (credited as Mos Def), Zooey Deschanel, Bill Nighy, Anna Chancellor, and John Malkovich, and the voices of Stephen Fry, Helen Mirren, Richard Griffiths, Thomas Lennon, Ian McNeice, and Alan Rickman.
NOTE: This is the 2005 feature film adaptation of Doug Adams' novel. This is DIFFERENT from the BBC TV series adaptation, which we watched a few weeks ago (July 27). The film adaptation is fairly faithful to the novel, but there are many changes and additions. So this is definitely something DIFFERENT than the BBC series.
Note that this event is not planned as a full-on dinner. Guests are welcome to bring any type of food or snack they want to share. This is completely optional. The host will be providing chicken wings and popcorn.
A new group of ESL students from Japan is arriving the day before. This watch party will be your first opportunity to meet Aino, who will be living in Tempe for 4 months while studying English as a Second Language (ESL) at Arizona State University (ASU).
Discussion (optional): After we watch the movie, anybody who wants to stay and discuss the movie (and the book) is welcome to do so. But this is certainly not a "requirement."
This was July's book club selection: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was our book club selection for July 2026. So we ALREADY had the book club meeting at Tempe Public Library on the last Wednesday of July. At "Book Club Selection Watch Parties" we typically don't discuss the movie after watching it, because that discussion is saved for the subsequent book club meeting. But because the book club meeting for this book has already taken place, we can discuss as much as we want!
